If anyone suffered through Sunday’s agonizing game than you can consider yourself a true fan, because it took a fan with an intensely high threshold for pain to endure that one. The Arizona Cardinals dropped their 3rd straight game enroute to a 3-5 record, losing 17-10 in Tampa. When the opposing team controls the ball for nearly 3/4 of the game, you should consider yourself very lucky the score isn’t more reminiscent of that beat down Kansas handed out to Nebraska on Saturday.
After having two weeks to prepare for this game, the Cards offense came out flat and out of sync. Apart from the opening drive and one late in the fourth quarter, the Cards didn’t convert on 9 straight 3rd down conversions. It sure as hell didn’t look like we were coming off of a bye week, the team looked lethargic, slow and basically outmatched from the very start. Kurt Warner was high on nearly every throw in the first half, the receivers were running poor routes, and the Bucs defense manhandled our O-Line, basically eliminating Edgerrin James from the gameplan altogether.
Our defense was the only bright spot (if you want to call it that) of the game, keeping us in it the entire time. This has been the norm for the Cards this year: a revamped defense that is playing well above expectations and keeping the team in close games all year long. The problem is that our OFFENSE NEEDS TO STEP UP AND MAKE PLAYS! With all the talent we have on that side of the ball we should not have to struggle this much to put up points.
For now we return to the friendly confines of University of Phoenix Stadium, where we will host the surprising 6-2 Detroit Lions. This is basically the same team we faced last year and beat in our house 17-10, but they’ve added some receiving threats, namely rookie Calvin Johnson. But Detroit isn’t going to trick you, they are a pass first offense. So if we aren’t prepared to put up points in a shootout then we could be in trouble.
**Quick Hits:
- Seattle lost to the Browns, bringing their record to 4-4. San Francisco lost to Atlanta, bringing their record to 2-6. So we remain in second place just one game back, thanks Cleveland!
- Even though Edge only rushed for 15 yards on 9 carries, those 15 yards put him over 11,000 for his career. Congrats Edge!!
