The Detroit Lions amassed -18 yards rushing yesterday, that is lowest amount in over fifty years!! That was the story of the Arizona Cardinals’ victory yesterday over the supposedly “elite” Lions; a dominating defensive effort led by LB Karlos Dansby and DT Darnell Dockett (who else!).
Here were the quick hits of the game that led to the big win:
1. The Cards defense forced 5 turnovers, which led to 17 points for the Cards. Dansby had two interceptions as well as several key tackles all over the field. It was great to see him in the lineup again.
2. After an early INT, Kurt Warner rebounded to throw for over 250 yards and 3 TDs. His favorite target was Larry Fitzgerald, who along with TE Leonard Pope, each had 2 TDs in the game.
3. The Cards D-Line completely shut down the Lions ground game, forcing them to be one-dimensional and attempt to throw it almost every play. This game was not nearly as close as the score indicated.
4. Rookie return man Steve Breaston continued his strong season in the return game, setting up the Cards with great field position on several punt and kick returns.
Now here we sit, 4-5 in second place in the West. But, the Seahawks are playing the 49ers tonight, and as much as it pains me to say it (and believe me it does), we have to pull for the Niners in the upset win. If they pull it off, we’re back into that tie for first with the next three games being very winnable as long as we continue to produce the way we did yesterday.
****On a side note, I’d like to throw a shout out to my boy Shaun MacDonald in his return to Arizona with Detroit. Shaun is a Phoenix native, a former all-american at ASU, and a former high school football teammate of mine at Shadow Mountain High School in Paradise Valley. While I was glad we were able to get the W, Shaun had some nice grabs in the game yesterday. Hopefully in the future we can sign him and bring him home!
