Meaningful games in December – we’ve been waiting a while for this here in the Valley. This Sunday, the Arizona Cardinals travel to Qwest Field to take on the Seattle Seahawks for a match up that is loaded with playoff implications for BOTH TEAMS! Here’s the rundown on the Battle in Seattle……
What’s at stake?
The NFC West title! The Seahawks can clinch the division with a win over Arizona by virtue of having a better in-division record than the Cards, even though AZ can still finish with the same record. Arizona can remain in the lead for the sixth and final Wild Card spot in the NFC and still keep hopes of a division title alive with another Seattle loss down the stretch. With Minnesota really starting to come on strong due to their power running game, a victory is absolutely critical for the Cards to stay in the hunt.
Who will step up?
Honestly, to get this victory we will need a complete game and a complete team effort. Pro Bowl receivers Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin are still in doubt for this weekend, meaning that a lot of guys who usually are role players will have to step forward and have big days, namely WR Bryant Johnson. He is a speedy, big receiver but is not nearly as explosive as either Boldin or Fitzgerald. The defense will have to come to play and look to pressure Seahawks QB Matt Hasselback in Seattle’s new Pass-First offense. And Special Teams, Special Teams, Special Teams!!
Like I said, a complete team effort from top to bottom.
In the end it will come down to who wants it more, the Cards or the Seahawks. Seattle is on a mission to prove this is still their division, while the Cards are trying to forge a new chapter in their bleek history. But in Ken Whisenhunt’s first year in the desert, having the Cards in a position to make their own fate is huge, beyond anything every other first year coach has been able to do.
It’s going to be a battle, and I feel that we really are turning that corner: Cards win a close one 27 – 24. GO CARDS!!
