Loading ...Pace to go Swimming with the Dolphins???
Well, the free agent period officially began this morning at 12:01AM EST, and we all knew that after the season that Calvin Pace had at OLB that he would draw significant interest from alot of teams out there.
Now Foxsports.com has just put out a preliminary report that the Miami Dolphins are going to make Pace an offer this year similar to those seen by LBs Adelius Thomas and Joey Porter last season, somewhere in the neighborhood of $30+ million. That is definately going to raise some eyebrows and is a testament to what Pace accomplished last year in his first season at LB.
He is scheduled to make a free agent trip to visit with the Dolphins in the next few days, so alot of things can happen between now and then. This is an example of how Larry Fitzgerald’s monster contract is going to hurt us for next year. And if Pace decides to take the offer from the Dolphins (which you certainly can’t fault him for if they are really going to throw that much money at him), then we’ll know two things:
1. The Fitzgerald Fiasco is going to continue to hurt this team’s ability to get those critical role players in free agency or re-sign our starters.
2. The Cards are more than likely going to draft a Defensive player with their first round pick in the draft to replace Pace(Derrick Harvey or Calais Campbell).
However, there is some good news. We were able to tender offers to restricted free agents CB Eric Green and DE Antonio Smith. By making these offers, it means that teams who would want to sign these guys would have to give up a first round draft pick to us (not gonna happen). So it is highly likely they will remain in the desert for the 2008 season.
But the free agent market just opened, so we’ll have to just wait it out for now…..
