Leaving So Soon?

You know how the old saying goes, “all good things must come to an end.”  Well, that quote rings no more in truth than it does today for Arizona Cardinals head trainer John Omohundro, a.k.a. “Omo”.  Sources say that Omo is going to be retiring soon.  According to Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic, as printed on azcentral.com, it is unclear whether Omo will stay on for 2008 or be retiring in full prior to the 2008 season.

Omo has been the head trainer for the Cardinals for the past 36 years and with the organization for the past 41 years.  He spent the first five as an assistant trainer.

I was lucky enough to meet and work with Omo for two training camps, back in 1989 and 1990.  He, and his sons John and Jim, are class acts and good people.   Jim also works for the organization as a broadcast coordinator and producer.

I spent time those two seasons working with the equipment manager and helping the trainers out where needed during training camp in Flagstaff, Arizona.  Looking back, it is amazing even at that point Omo had already been with the organization for 22 and 23 years respectively.  There are probably those of you asking why I take the time to recognize the trainer.  Well, this well respected gentleman has put in two-thirds of his life with the Cardinals and having been able to meet and work with him at a point during this tenure, I felt it was the best thing I could do to recognize Omo and the heck of a job he has done taking care of our Cards over the past four decades.  Thank you Omo!
