A Deeper Look Into the Numbers

NASHVILLE, TN - AUGUST 23: Quarterback Matt Leinart of the Arizona Cardinals surveys the Tennessee Titans defense during a preseason game at LP Field on August 23, 2010 in Nashville, Tennessee. Tennessee defeated Arizona, 24-10. (Photo by Grant Halverson/Getty Images)

If you are a numbers guy, well, then Matt Leinart isn't your guy to quarterback the Arizona Cardinals after two games into the preseason.

A quick look at the numbers so far two games in:

Matt Leinart: 10-13 , 77 yds, 0 TD, 0 INT

Derek Anderson: 24-41, 193 yds, 1 TD, 2 INT

John Skelton: 5-6, 84 yds, 1TD, 0 INT

Max Hall: 7-15, 101 yds, 1 TD, 1 INT

Not that impressive huh?  Skelton and Hall you don't read too much into it.  It is a nice competition to see who will be the number three guy.  As for Leinart and Anderson, at least Anderson is moving the ball.  Let's also remember that Anderson isn't facing all number one guys either.  However Leinart is and will come September 12th going forward, so, to me, there is a little reason for concern, however we have to let him play longer than one quarter.  His offensive line also needs to give him more time to throw out of the pocket.

This Saturday against the Chicago Bears, expect to see Leinart for at least a half, if not longer.  Anderson will probably mop up whatever mess Leinart causes is my best guess.  I imagine we will see a lot of Hall and Skelton in the fourth game against the Washington Redskins.

If nothing else, I give Leinart the benefit of the doubt, solely by the way he’s been able to shrug off this massive target on his back that the media is firing at will at.

“This Saturday against the Chicago Bears, expect to see Leinart for at least a half, if not longer”

this Sat, expect to see Leinart exactly as long as Whiz wants to see Leinart, that could just as easily be 6 downs as it could be a half and watching Whiz’s track record with starting QBs you better be betting under 12 downs

Whiz KNOWS what Leinart can do, far better than you do, which is why he isn’t being played much

a ‘close’ look at the numbers is absolutely meaningless, I guarantee that Whiz doesn’t even know those numbers, he just cares about what he is seeing …

you’re right Phil – Whiz doesn’t care about numbers, but fans do and this is who this blog is for – the fans.

Historically, the first string gets their most playing time of the preseason in the 3rd game, so at least the first half for Leinart is absolutely accurate.
Since you KNOW him, tell Whiz I said hello Phil.
