With the amount of money the Arizona Cardinals invested in
Kevin Kolb a year ago, it certainly would have been a very safe choice for
Ken Whisenhunt to name Kolb as the starting quarterback for Game 1 against the
Seattle Seahawks, especially since Kolb and
John Skelton were prettty much dead even in their preseason performance. So you have to admire Whinsenhunt for what is clearly a somewhat gutsy choice of Skelton, and it seems that he honestly feels that Skelton gives the team a better chance to win.
Certainly the decision is not irreversible, and if the Cardinals slide in the first two or three games, don’t be surprised if Whiz decides to switch to Kolb as the Cardinals starting quarterback.
For now, let’s hope the team can rally around the choice — and give Skelton the confidence he needs to thrive as an NFL starting quarterback (and a little extra time to throw his passes wouldn’t hurt either!).
