49’ers Alex Smith to the Arizona Cardinals Would Not be a Bad Thing

We all had our fun yesterday when the Boston Globe suggested that New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady be traded to the Arizona Cardinals so that the Pats could start re-building with a younger quarterback.  It was all in good fun as far as I was concerned.  However the talk of San Francisco 49’ers quarterback Alex Smith asking for his release or being traded to another team, possibly the Cards, is not as far-fetched.

The idea that the Niners would comply with Smith’s request to be released I could see happening but I don’t think that decision would come lightly.  First of all, they know what they have in Smith.  If something were to happen to Colin Kaepernick, Smith would be right back in the saddle.  They could trade him too.  If he were to be traded though, I would guarantee he would not be coming to the Cards, a divisional rival.

Just a couple of year ago you probably couldn’t get the Cleveland Browns to take Smith.  However after a fantastic 2011 season and a great start to 2012 before losing his job, Smith knows he will have people knocking at his door.  The Niners know this too.

Still, I could still see some way some how Smith ending up in Arizona.  He clearly would be the best available free agent quarterback. For now, we just dream of what may be to come.
