Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians settles backup quarterback position, for now

When Arizona Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer went down on Sunday, we all immediately knew it was Drew Stanton’s turn.  The question was, who stands behind him should something happen?  Cardinals head coach answered that question, at least with the answer as of today.  Tomorrow may be different.

The only quarterback on the roster after Stanton was rookie Logan Thomas.  Thomas, as you should remember, had to come in during the Denver Broncos game after Stanton left with a concussion.  The plan was certainly not to see Thomas that early and probably not for any part of 2014.

On Tuesday, the Cardinals added their former draft pick in Ryan Lindley as the supposed third quarterback.  I took it a step further yesterday and suggested that even though Lindley just got back that Lindley would jump Thomas on the depth chart given he spent all of 2013 and the 2014 preseason in the system.

On Wednesday however, Arians told the media that for now Thomas would be the backup as Lindley gets up to speed.  I still would be surprised if Thomas ends up as the backup on Sunday.  Arians will always say the right things leading up to game day.

I’m guessing he’s hoping there is progress between now and Sunday.  I know I am.  Thomas just isn’t ready.
