The Arizona Cardinals able to make a deal with the restricted free agent on Thursday

In tackle Bradley Sowell it is all about depth.  On Thursday the Arizona Cardinals ensured they kept depth at the tackle position by re-signing their restricted free agent to a one-year deal.

Sowell who will be entering his fourth-year in the NFL, will be a part of the Cardinals roster for the third year in a row.  He played his rookie season with the Indianapolis Colts.  He played in all 16 games for the Cardinals in 2014 but did not start any games.  He started in 12 of the 16 games he played in for the Cardinals in 2013.

Sowell won’t just be given a spot though.  He will have to earn his spot, whether it is starting or on the bench.  Many expect the Cardinals will address the offensive line to some extent in both free agency and/or the NFL Draft.

With tackles Bobbie Massie and Jared Veldheer already solidified on the roster, the competition is bound to be greater this year for Sowell if the Cardinals bring others in as well.  I think the competition is a good thing for Sowell though.  Push him before the season starts and see what he can do in comparison to others.

Sowell wasn’t the only move the Cardinals made on Thursday.  They also brought in cornerback Damond Smith.  Smith is out of South Alabama.  He was with the Kansas City Chiefs before the 2014 season but was not with the team during the season. He has never played in a regular season game.  He will add to the depth of competition at cornerback, another position the Cardinals may address in both free agency and the draft.  A lot will depend on what cornerback Antonio Cromartie decides to do.
