Arizona Cardinals Sign Two More Draft Picks

The Arizona Cardinals have just one draft pick left unsigned from their 2015 draft class

Chalk up two more players who have signed their rookie contracts with the Arizona Cardinals.  On Monday the Cardinals agreed to terms with two more draft picks, third-round pick running back David Johnson and seventh-round pick tight end Gerald Christian.

The move leaves only first-round pick D.J. Humphries unsigned as the team prepares to hit the field this week with OTA’s.  Igt’s no surprise that Humprhies was the last one from the draft class to sign his deal.  With the rookie slotting that takes place now I imagine it won’t be too long until he signs on the dotted line.  Last year first-round pick Deone Bucannon signed on June 5th and Jonathan Cooper signed at the beginning of training camp two seasons ago.  It’ll all get done in due time.  No worries.

Many are calling Johnson one of the steals of the draft.  He made the top 100 picks of the NFL Draft by nfl.com.  Johnson is expected to compete for time on the field with running back Andre Ellington.  Yesterday I detailed how I thought he would probably share carries with Ellington.

I know the Cardinals publicly for now are saying Ellington is the number one back but don’t be surprised if Johnson and Ellington share similar numbers this season.  Ellington had 660 yards rushing last season but missed the last quarter of the 2014 season.  Johnson has the same rushing and receiving skills that Ellington possesses except he’s bigger.  That’s what makes him so exciting.  There’s potential but we’ll have to wait and see how it translates on the field.

As for Christian, with the lack of depth the Cardinals have at tight end, I would be surprised if Christian isn’t given every chance to make the final roster.  The jury is out though.  The Cardinals need to add more veteran depth and then it could be a two or three man fight for a final tight end spot if that happens.
