Arizona Cardinals: WR Damond Powell Shot

Wide receiver Damond Powell was already facing an uphill battle to make the Arizona Cardinals roster

For Damond Powell, the end of the road might be here sooner than later as far as the Arizona Cardinals are concerned.  Powell, an undrafted free agent out of the University of Iowa, was shot in the face on Friday in Toledo, Ohio.

Powell was already facing a lot of competition in training camp, which starts next Friday July 31st in Glendale.  He sits behind Larry Fitzgerald, Michael Floyd, John Brown, Jaron Brown, J.J. Nelson, and Brittan Golden as candidates to make the final 53-man roster.

According to reports, Powell was sitting in his driveway in his car when shots rang out and hit him from down the street.  No other information about the incident has been released although officials do say his injuries are non life-threatening.  That’s great news.

The not so great news now is his status for training camp and moving forward is unknown.  The Cardinals have not said anything publicly yet.  They signed tight end Jermaine Gresham on Friday and did not make any corresponding move as of yet to clear the way for him, as the Cardinals were at the 90-man max.

Powell played in all 13 games last season for the Hawkeyes, where he had 19 receptions for 319 yards and three touchdowns.  He played two seasons at Iowa and played in all 26 games over those two seasons.  He had 12 receptions for 91 yards and two touchdowns in 2013.

My thoughts exactly.  Right now we should just all be happy Powell is still alive.  We don’t know what this holds for his near future with the Cardinals or in the NFL for that matter and honestly, it doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things.  Let’s all hope and pray for a quick recovery for Powell.
