Several surprises cut in the first wave

The Arizona Cardinals, like all other 31 teams, have to be down to 75-men on the roster by Tuesday afternoon, after last night’s disappointing “win” over the Oakland Raiders, the team made the first round of cuts, with two very notable veterans cut.

Team leader, special team extraordinaire Lorenzo Alexander was cut in this first wave, for a team with a serious lack of linebacker help, so much so that second-year “safety” Deone Bucannon plays linebacker in most defensive schemes, letting go of Alexander is very surprising. Coach Bruce Arians and GM Steve Keim have not addressed the media as of yet on why these particular cuts were made, but it may just be a numbers game.

The other surprise, not so much for who was cut, but who wasn’t (yet) is that injury-plauged punter Dave Zastudil was cut leaving Drew Butler as the only punter on the roster at the moment. It could be that the Cardinals will look at who is cut from other teams (since most teams only carry one punter) there may be someone better on the scrap heap at the end of the week (Saturday is the 53-man limit for cuts). We shouldn’t award Butler with anything other than making Cardinals fans cringe at last season’s wild card game.

The list of other cuts, and one waived player due to injury isn’t surprising, but is as follows:

ILB Glenn Carson
G Nate Isles
ILB Edwin Jackson
ILB Andrae Kirk
S Shaq Richardson
TE Gannon Sinclair
WR Ryan Spadola
S Darren Woodard

The Cardinals also waived-injured wide receiver Travis Harvey (hamstring). The deadly “h” word strikes again.

In the coming days the Cardinals will have to make some tough choices at their deepest positions, namely wide receiver and running back where special teams contributors will be chosen, but cut players could very easily become starters for some less-talent rich teams in the league. Some of these players could made it to the practice squad, but that process won’t start until next week and all players can pass through waivers.
