Arizona Cardinals: Ellington returns but Johnson should be focus

The Arizona Cardinals face the St. Louis Rams Sunday afternoon at University of Phoenix Stadium.  When they do they will have running back Andre Ellington back and again will have the three-headed monster at running back they wanted when the season began.

However, Chris Johnson will still be the starter and should be.  Johnson has earned the starts with his rushing and receiving three weeks.  Also, rookie David Johnson has impressed and should get touches as well.

I do want to see Ellington get his touches no doubt but there is no rush to bring him back full speed at the rate the Cardinals have been able to move the ball with Chris Johnson carrying the ball.  Johnson ran the ball 22 times last Sunday for 110 yards against the San Francisco 49ers.

I would give it a couple of weeks before the Cardinals try to give Ellington the 20-25 touches they want to get him from game to game.  Maybe not even at that point though if Chris Johnson continues to be successful.  So far, Chris Johnson has been everything the Cardinals wanted and thought they’d get in case Ellington did go down with injury at some point.

I don’t think the Cardinals envisioned Ellington going down that early in the season though.  Luckily he only will have missed two games but to avoid it being more down the road, the Cardinals need to continue to rely on both Chris and David Johnson and not go away from them just because Ellington has returned.

I trust in what the Cardinals have planned but I think sometimes the Cardinals do try to do too much with Ellington just because of how good he is running with and catching the ball.  The Cardinals though also have the same versatility in both Chris and David Johnson though as we’ve seen through the first three games.  Ease Ellington in and the Cardinals and Ellington will be better off for it.
