The Arizona Cardinals are just five days away from opening training camp in Glendale

We continue our annual look at player by player from A to Z on the current Arizona Cardinals roster as we are now entering the final stages of the offseason before the start of training camp. Players report to training camp this Thursday July 28th.

In this profile we look at tight end Darren Fells.  He enters his third season in the NFL out of California-Irvine.

2015: For a guy that didn’t play football until a few years ago, Fells had himself a nice season last year.  He was the leading receiver at tight end with 21 receptions for 311 yards and three touchdowns.

Given that the Cardinals don’t utilize their tight ends much in the passing game, at least not as much as many other teams, Fells was productive.  He started 12 of the 14 games in which he played in last season.

Fells best game last season was in the opener in which he caught four passes for 82 yards against the New Orleans Saints.  He also caught his first touchdown pass in that game.

2016: Projected to be the number one tight end on the roster.  The Cardinals went out and re-signed Jermaine Gresham but he didn’t produce the way the Cardinals thought he would last season.

Fells, a basketball player originally, has transitioned nicely to the NFL game.  The trick will be to get him more involved in the offense this season.  That could prove to be difficult with all the weapons the Cardinals posses on offense.

If he can remain healthy and productive then he should keep the number one tight end spot. Gresham will push him if he is healthy himself.  Certainly seeing both of them perform would be optimal.
