Arizona Cardinals extend receiver Jaron Brown

The Arizona Cardinals took care of one of their receivers for 2017 on Wednesday

The Arizona Cardinals lost receiver Jaron Brown a few weeks ago to a season-ending injury.  That doesn’t mean they forgot about him.  In fact, they rewarded him.

On Wednesday, the Cardinals gave Brown a one-year extension to his current contract.  Some felt it was a sign that the end was nearing for receiver Michael Floyd.

I wouldn’t look at it that way.  There have been no decisions made on Floyd yet.  While he has struggled for most of the season, he started coming around last week in the victory over the San Francisco 49ers.

Brown’s contract should have no bearing one way or the other on Floyd’s future with the organization. Floyd could be fantastic over the last seven weeks and guaranteed he isn’t leaving Arizona.

There is room for Brown and Floyd, even with receivers Larry Fitzgerald and John Brown in the fold.  There may be a bit of wishful thinking with Cardinals fans in this transaction.

There is little doubt Floyd will need to be close to lights out over the last seven games of the 2016 regular season if he wishes to be around in 2017.  The door isn’t shut on that decision yet one way or another.  Time is ticking though.

As far as Brown goes, it is a testament to how the Cardinals feel about him.  He was great in training camp and was a reliable number four receiver before getting hurt.

The Cardinals likely felt they hadn’t seen enough of Brown to make a long-term decision but had seen enough to bring him back again to give it a go in 2017.  The one-year contract makes sense.

Some fans seemed to yearn for a longer contract based on comments on social media on Wednesday.  If he can stay healthy and perform over a 16-game season like he started out in 2016, then that long-term contract will come soon.
