The Arizona Cardinals have typically only kept two quarterbacks on the active roster in recent years

When starting quarterback Carson Palmer goes down and is out, all bets are usually off when it comes to the depth chart for Arizona Cardinals quarterbacks.  If everyone is healthy, two quarterbacks usually suffice.

With five quarterbacks in camp right now, which includes newcomer Blaine Gabbert, it begs the question, how many would the Cardinals keep going into the 2017 season?  Reports say Gabbert is practicing very well.

If it comes to choosing between Stanton and Gabbert, who do you take?  Experience tells us it should be Stanton.  It is still difficult to understand if this is Bruce Arians and Steve Keim throwing a bone and getting a look at a guy or if they are truly serious about keeping him because he hasn’t been coached in this system before?

It is still difficult to believe the Cardinals would keep Gabbert over Stanton.  Stanton has been in the system for four years now, going into his fifth.  Even longer if you want to count his days with Arians and the Indianapolis Colts prior to coming to Arizona in 2013.

I think it would take a miracle for Trevor Knight or Zac Dysert to make the roster.  Not when Palmer takes almost all of the snaps and Stanton is healthy.

Things change though, which is why the Gabbert question will likely be brought up all summer until training camp ends. I still don’t think it matters how he performs in practice.

If he plays lights out in the preseason, then is it possible to keep him?  I think it’s possible now, just not likely.  Game action gives you more to go on, but again, its just preseason.

When the 53-man roster is released in September, expect Palmer and Stanton to be one and two on the depth chart.  Expect Gabbert to be looking for another job.  Just a hunch.
