Running back Chris Johnson will be returning to the Arizona Cardinals for 2017

Chris Johnson will go down in history as one of the most dynamic players to play the game. He is a former 2,000 yard rusher, and one of the great big-play guys ever. Though he’s not as fast as he once was, he has shown an ability to still contribute. The Arizona Cardinals think he has something left, and have re-signed him on a one-year contract.

Johnson spent the first six years of his career in Tennessee. In those years, he never rushed for less than 1,000 yards, and averaged more then 1,300 yards per season. He also averaged over nine touchdowns.

After a season with the Jets in New York, Johnson signed with the Cardinals. In the last two seasons, injuries have had an effect, limiting him to a total of just 909 total rushing yards. He’s only played in 15 of 32 games the team has played.

Going into the 2017 season, the Cardinals have questions at running back. David Johnson is one of the league’s best, but behind him, it’s slim. Kerwynn Williams returns, but is mostly untested. Andre Ellington was brought back, but is slated to be a receiver. The team also drafted TJ Logan, but he’s expected to be mostly a special teams guy right now.

In 2016, Johnson carried the ball just 25 times for less than 100 yards. He only played in four games before injuring his groin and being placed on IR. In 2015, his season was ended with a broken tibia.

The Cardinals definitely needed running back help. They’re expected to use David Johnson even more, but they need a backup.  If he can stay healthy, Chris Johnson could be that guy. The team, and the fans, certainly hope he has something left. As Adam Schefter reported, he returns on a one-year deal.
