The Arizona Cardinals reached their roster limit of 90 players today by signing defensive end Landon Cohen. Cohen, who played in one game last season for the New England Patriots, was the last man to fill out a roster full of players we don’t know what to expect.

The Cardinals have a couple of players they still need to sign and that will weed out some of the extra guys who are there only to temporarily fill a roster spot cause they can once they reach agreements with the other unsigned free agents. For purposes of camps and OTA’s, never hurts to have another defensive end as a practice dummy, not that I’m saying Cohen is one, but still. Do you really see Cohen on the roster come September? Yeah, me neither.

The first voluntary OTA’s are next week from the 22nd to the 24th, so there should be no shortage of players on the field. Sure, the title says voluntry, but that means really be there when it comes to many teams, the Cardinals being no exception.

Last year, before the 2011 season began, I wrote a post about the Arizona Cardinals finally having a weapon at tight end. The Cardinals had signed Todd Heap, an all-pro tight end, and filled in their roster with two other promising players at the tight end position, Rob Housler and Jeff King. Unfortunately, we all know what happened. Heap was out with an injury in more games than he played, and Housler and King–while showing some flashes of brilliance–never got into a good rhythm. Together all three players caught 63 passes. (Rob Dray caught two passes, for a grand total [...]

Another Chance for the Three Arizona Cardinals Tight Ends - Raising Zona - Raising Zona - An Arizona Cardinals Fan Site - News, Blogs, Opinion and more.

Unfortunately, we all know what happened. Heap was out with an injury in more games than he played, and Housler and King–while showing some flashes of brilliance–never got into a good rhythm. Together all three players caught 63 passes. (Rob Dray caught two passes, for a grand total of 65 receptions.) That’s more than the tight ends for the Cardinals have caught in previous seasons, but short of expectations.

Now the Cardinals are preparing for the 2012 season, and believe it or not, I’m still bullish on the three players, if they can stay healthy. With Malcolm Floyd likely pairing with Larry Fitzgerald on many plays, the opportunity for a tight end to be wide open in the flat increases. In addition, all three tight ends are big, strong guys and better than average blockers, which should help Kevin Kolb and John Skelton avoid getting sacked. I’m expecting much better things in 2012 from Heap, King, and Housler. Let’s hope it materializes as planned.

For all the naysayers, a good point was brought up the other day by azcardinals.com’s Darren Urban. The last four players who have been publicly promised extensions by the organization, Adrian Wilson, Darnell Dockett, Larry Fitzgerald, and Calais Campbell, all got their extensions. It is a good point to remember that when the Arizona Cardinals mention wanting to get something done, they are coming through.

You can’t complain about the extensions given. They never promised Anquan Boldin and Karlos Dansby extensions, at least not publicly. Sure, you could argue the Cards should have. At the same time though, there is only so much money to go around. Campbell was the latest recipient of an extension this week and it was well deserved. Same could be said about the other four guys too.

All of those players have performed well eventually after their extensions. Yes, it can provided added pressure, but Dockett, Fitzgerald, and Wilson have all been to Pro-Bowls since signing their contracts. The Cards we can finally say, are spending their money well. There is no reason to believe Campbell will not continue that trend.
