Washington Redskins at Phoenix Cardinals – October 4, 1992

Although a home game for the Redbirds, the Skins came to town as 10 point favorites.  Redskins QB Mark Rypien quickly showed why with two touchdown passes, and by half time the Cardinals were deeply in the hole.

Half time:  Redskins 17 Cardinals 0

Phoenix finally got on the board in the 3rd quarter with a 1 yard run from one of my favorite names in football, Ivory Lee Brown, but the Redskins immediately answered.

End of 3rd quarter:  Redskins 24 Cardinals 6

With the game seemingly over, the defense stepped up in a big way.  Cardinals Cornerback Robert Massey intercepted Rypien for a 31 yard pick six.  Still trailing, that wasn’t enough for Massey.  He then intercepted Rypien AGAIN for a 41 yard pick six.  All that remained was for Phoenix Quarterback Chris Chandler to find Larry Centers in the end zone with time winding down.

Final score:  Cardinals 27 Redskins 24

Rypien out passed Chandler 258-196 and Washington’s leading rusher, Byner, eclipsed Brown, but at the end of the day, the defense made all the difference.
