Holy Todd Heap! Tight End Joins Arizona Cardinals

The Arizona Cardinals might have just made the biggest splash into the free agent market since they moved to Arizona 23 years ago.  Today, they got the complete tight end they’ve been searching for since the days Jay Novacek bolted for the Dallas Cowboys.  Free Agent Todd Heap, formerly of the Baltimore Ravens, signed a two-year deal with the Cardinals Sunday morning.

Heap, local Mesa, AZ product who went to Arizona State, has 467 receptions and 41 TD’s lifetime over the span of 10 seasons. He only played six games in 2004 and 2007.  He has missed only three games over the past three seasons.

The Cardinals finally land a Pro-Bowl tight end they’ve desperately needed for such a long time.  Now, with Heap in the mix, he can also mentor third round draft pick Rob Housler out of Florida Atlantic to be the TE of the future for the Cards.

It was a great disappointment when the Cards passed on Todd Heap in the 2001 draft. Todd was simply great as a Sun Devil and it was an easy pick for the Ravens. The cards took the underachieving Leonard Davis out of Texas. I guess that was during the bad old days. Now the Cards have decided to take a flyer on a tight end with ten years of NFL abuse on his body. I hope that Heap has something left so that he can contribute. the Cards recent activity makes me think they are actually trying to put a competitive team on the field. They just need about 3 or 4 more offensive linemen who can block. Poor Kevin Kob will be running for his life behind the current bunch.

I think Todd Heap will be just fine. He’s missed 3 games in the past 3 seasons. Kolb may not be running as much as you think. Granted – not the most exciting bunch of OL – however, I think things will be better than you think
