Arizona Cardinals Take DT Dan Williams from Tennessee
By Scott Allen
The Arizona Cardinals made their first round pick at number 26.
Welcome to the Arizona Cardinals family Dan Williams.
Williams, DT from Tennessee has powerful lower body strength and is explosive. He had 132 tackles and five sacks in his senior season for the Vols. Williams struggled early in his time at Tennessee, however with an attitude change and drop in weight, he became an elite prospect rather than being thought of as being a possible NFL backup.
Not a huge surprise going with a defensive tackle. I still don’t think it was the greatest need for the Cardinals, however, it may have been a smart choice. Although I think QB Jimmy Clausen will be a very good quarterback in the NFL, I think the Cardinals made a statement to Matt Leinart tonight that they are going with him for now. I would still not put it past them to select a quarterback tomorrow in rounds two and three though.
The Cardinals are also known to have a need at linebacker and a couple of really good choices were on the board still at 26. However, when I saw Williams was still on the board, I thought he might go to Arizona if Clausen wasn’t going to be the choice. I was secretly hoping for Jerry Hughes but the Cards did well for themselves, better than I think they expected to get once their number was up.
Now the Cards have a little less than 24 hours to think about their next pick at number 58 in the second round.
