Arizona Cardinals Cut Roster Down to 75 Players
By Scott Allen
The Arizona Cardinals wasted little time getting down to the 75-man roster limit that had a Monday deadline on it. After the Cards returned from their 32-27 loss to the Tennessee Titans Thursday night, on Friday it was time to get down to business. This gives the Cards a couple of extra days to work with what they will have going into the final preseason game next Thursday against the Denver Broncos.
The Cardinals cut 12 players, placed one on injured reserve, and two on the waived-injured list. Levi Brown was placed on injured reserve, effectively ending his season. Running back Thomas Clayton and fullback Jared Crank were placed on the waived injured-list.
Amongst those waived:
WR Gino Crump – University of Arizona product who didn’t end up doing much in the preseason after a nice mini-camp.
K/P Ricky Scmitt – early on he impressed and it was thought he might push it until the last cuts, however this may give him a chance to hook onto another club. I would say we may not have seen the last of him.
CB Marshay Green – not a huge surprise here. Green has not been very good during his time with the Cards. With added depth in the off-season, the writing was on the wall for Green.
WR Jaymar Johnson – a victim of numbers. Too many WR’s and not enough to be able to keep. There are others who remained ahead of him on the depth chart.
FB Reagan Maui’a – a little bit of a surprise he was cut this early given his history with the team. However with Anthony Sherman and then the chance a tight end like Jim Dray or Steve Skelton takes an extra TE or an added FB presence, Maui’a was also facing a numbers game.
Other cuts include: DT Landon Cohen, S Eddie Elder, WR Tre Gray, LB Marcus McGraw, LB Zach Nash, CB James Nixon, and LB Paul Vassallo
