Arizona Cardinals Running Game Will be Heavily Counted on
By Scott Allen
With as much attention as the quarterback position has received over the last month during the preseason for the Arizona Cardinals, we almost forgot to put some attention on the running game. With as anemic as the passing game has seemed and could be in the regular season, the running game will be heavily counted on to produce big numbers in 2012.
We know Beanie Wells and what he can do. He had some strong runs after sitting out the first couple of games due to injury. He looks like he will be able to produce another strong season in spite of a poor offensive line. He just needs to stay healthy.
Ryan Williams is going to be exciting to watch. Coming off a missed season due to a knee injury, Williams looks like he could put up some big numbers as well in the 2012 season.
The biggest surprise this preseason has been William Powell. Powell led all of the NFL this preseason with 249 yards rushing. I know it doesn’t mean much however for a guy not even projected to make the roster when training camp started, that says something. He could provide great stretches of breaks for Wells and Williams.
Along with LaRod Stephens-Howling it should be a formidable group of backs who can step up and produce when the rest of the offense isn’t. That being said, it is usually the running game that sets up a great passing game. Successful runners could lead to a successful passing game. I’m just saying.
