We had the opportunity to chat this week with the editor of The Jet Press, Alan Schechter, about the New York Jets. We did a question and answer session to get to know what is going on inside the this week’s Arizona Cardinals opponent.
Raising Zona: What are the reasons Rex Ryan refuses to use Tim Tebow in place of Mark Sanchez? Are you a fan of Tebow?
The Jet Press: My readers know this, I am no fan of Tim Tebow. I have hated the move since a couple seconds after it happened. I think he creates too much of a distraction, and is not worth the headache. A lot of people think that Tebow isn’t being used because of contract escalators, but I don’t buy it. That assumes that the Jets didn’t read his contract before acquiring him. I mean, anything is possible but I just don’t see it. I honestly believe that the coach doesn’t feel he is any good. I know that offends a lot of football fans that think he is the greatest quarterback ever to set foot on a football field, but that is what I think and what I believe the coaches think.
RZ: Are the Jets destined to be blown up (rebuilt) in the off-season and do you think this includes Rex?
TJP: I think that there are severe changes coming in the off-season, but I don’t believe it will include Rex. A lot of the problems here fall on the general manager, as he didn’t provide Rex with a great roster, especially on the offensive side of the football. Mike Tannenbaum has a better chance of being out of a job, and there will be many changes though.
RZ: Any chance the Jets win their last five games, finish 9-7 and sneak into the playoffs?
TJP:Anything is possible, but it is tough to have enough confidence in this team to do something like that. They are just far too inconsistent, and far too weak on offense.
RZ: Do you think Fireman Ed is really hanging up his hat forever and if so, do you believe his reasoning for no longer wanting to be the Jets Super-fan?
TJP: I do believe Fireman Ed is hanging up his hat for good, and I absolutely buy into his reasoning because I have seen it. I have met Ed on a couple of occasions, and even interviewed him for the JET Press. He is a terrific guy and a passionate Jets fan. When the Jets don’t do well, younger fans get on his case as if he is part of the organization. He catches some hell from Jets fan. It is rough, and far from being right. Let’s see, the Jets aren’t playing well, so argue and curse out a big Jets fan. Does that make sense? Of course not. His safety and well being, as well as the safety and well being of his family have to come first. I’ll miss him, but the Jets will go on.
RZ: Game prediction?
TJP: Low scoring affair that the Jets come out in front.
