When it was reported that the Arizona Cardinals added a Gruden to the interview list, of course I was all excited that John Gruden had agreed to interview for an opening. Then I found out it was Jay Gruden, John’s brother, who is currently the offensive coordinator with the Cincinnati Bengals. I knew that Jay Gruden was on the short list of a couple of teams. The Arizona Cardinals never struck me as one of those teams interested.
Granted, Gruden is an offensive coach, however I’d probably look to a guy like Mike McCoy, offensive coordinator of the Denver Broncos first. They did look to him first as he was interviewed yesterday. I guess you do your due diligence but I’d prefer other guys over Gruden. Cincinnati is not exactly an explosive offensive unit.
Whoever comes in, we just need to be patient. Sure, you want to be the other guy to the punch and get the coach you want but not at all costs. Do it right. If that means interviewing Gruden in the process, so be it. Personally I don’t think the Cards will end up hiring him. The Cards will have their guy before too long.
