The Arizona Cardinals made their first round of cuts on Sunday, a day after losing 24-7 to the San Diego Chargers.  Amongst the cuts were kicker Dan Carpenter, who just signed with the Cards earlier in the week to provide competition for kicker Jay Feely.  Feely has won the job for now.

Amongst the other cuts were DE Cordian Hagans, WR Jarett Dillard, WR Nick Edwards, C Deveric Gallington, LB Korey Jones, QB Caleb Terbush, DT Jonathan Mathis and CB Ronnie Yell.  No real surprises here.  There usually aren’t in the first round of cuts.

I would say Carpenter has to be the most surprising only because he was signed just days ago.  The thought was he would push Feely for the kicking job but Carpenter got one chance in live game action and failed miserably, having his only field goal attempt against the Chargers blocked.  Word is Carpenter also struggled in practice.  The Cards are the second team to cut Carpenter this preseason.

Dillard actually reached an injury settlement a few days ago, so his cut was not surprising.  Yell was caught up in a numbers game.  The Cards are loaded in the defensive backfield. Terbush never had a chance.  The Cards are thought to only be considering keeping two quarterbacks instead of the traditional three, so clearly Terbush was just there to be another body in camp.

The Cards must be down to the 53-man roster by next Sunday at 3pm.  They have one more preseason game in Denver on Thursday.
