The Arizona Cardinals made their first round of cuts to get down from 75 to 60 yesterday, including the placement of rookie guard Jonathan Cooper onto season-ending injured reserve. There is a lot of speculation still around the wide receivers and quarterback position as well as how many corners will the Cards keep? The deadline to get to 53 is this afternoon by 3pm Arizona time. On the bubble are guys like third-string quarterback Ryan Lindley, receiver Jaron Brown, corner Antonie Cason, tight ends Jeff King and Jim Dray, corner Jamell Fleming, running back Ryan Williams (although all indications are he has made this team for now), tight end D.C. Jefferson, safety Tony Jefferson, and linebacker Kenny Demens. These are the guys to be on the lookout for.
Personally I’m a team should keep three quarterbacks kind of guy. I know some have argued for two simply because of the thought that if you are on your third stringer, then your season is over. I don’t buy into that theory. Sometimes you can have things happen to your first two guys that could be temporary. If Carson Palmer is injured and may miss only a week or two, then Drew Stanton comes in to start, who will his backup be? I’d much prefer a guy who knows the system rather than bringing some scrub in off the street.
We’ll see though. Stay tuned this afternoon.
