Arizona Cardinals: Top 5 DB at Scouting Combine
By Scott Allen
The Arizona Cardinals could be looking for help at cornerback and/or safety in this year’s draft
Although the positions are not a top priority in the eyes of many for the Arizona Cardinals, there are some good cornerbacks and safeties in this years draft worth a look. It isn’t a particularly deep draft for either position but both have guys that could help the Cardinals.

The Cardinals are most likely going to lose Antonio Cromartie in free agency, so there is one spot up for grabs either in free agency or the draft. The Cardinals are going to be deep at safety again but that doesn’t mean don’t draft one for extra depth. Here are five guys the Cardinals should be looking at this week at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.
1. P.J. Williams, CB, Florida State
This kid has all the tools. I don’t know if the Cards want to use a first-round pick on a cornerback but if they do, this is the guy to look at. He has great size. He has great timing. Scouts are mostly positive about the corner from Florida State. The biggest negative on him seems to be he sometimes loses interest, therefore could hurt focus. I don’t think that would carry to be an issue in Arizona. Not with this coaching staff.
2. Jalen Collins, CB, LSU
Another corner with all the skills needed to succeed in the NFL. He has great size and great footwork. He also has great leaping ability. NFL.com gives him a high grade of 6.1 just like Williams. His biggest knock is having patience and only had 10 starts at LSU.
3. Alex Carter, CB, Stanford
With 41 tackles and just one interception in the 2014 season with Stanford, Carter doesn’t jump off the sheet at you but he is very physical, something that is a plus if you are a Cardinals fan. He is projected anywhere from the first-round to the third-round according to walterfootball.com. They have him as the fifth ranked cornerback in the draft. If he is around in the third-round, he could be a decent pickup. Hopefully the Cards are watching this week.
4. Landon Collins, SS, Alabama
If the Cardinals really needed a top-line safety in the draft, Landon Collins would be trading up to this guy because he most likely will be gone before the Cardinals pick at number 24 in the first-round. I put him here because he certainly could elevate the defensive backfield with his skills. You never know what can happen, so the Cardinals would be amiss if they don’t watch him this week, Collins is fast, physical, and disciplined. He can also contribute on special teams.
5. Jaquiski Tartt, SS, Samford
He was a finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award, which is given to the top defensive player in Division 1 – FCS. He is one of the better FCS prospects this season. He is quick and confident. He does have a hard time covering post routes at times according to nfl.com.
