The Arizona Cardinals signed two players they tried out this past weekend
The Arizona Cardinals have signed two players they tried out this past weekend during their three-day rookie mini-camp. Â They released two players to make room.
The Cardinals signed running back Elijhaa Penny and receiver Chris Hubert. Â While neither one figures to make the final roster, they were impressive enough to add to the current roster and drop two others.
To make room, the Cardinals released linebacker Mike Reilly and running back Jared Baker. Â Baker was added as an undrafted free agent last week after the conclusion of the 2016 NFL Draft.
Penny, who went to Fayetteville State and Hubert, from Idaho will likely find it tough to make this team given where they play. Â We know the Cardinals are very deep at both positions.
One guy who was here on tryout but not added to the roster was quarterback Stephen Rivers. Â He is the younger brother of San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers. Â Without adding Rivers to the current roster, that leaves the roster with four quarterbacks and likely Jake Coker as the only competition for Matt Barkley for the third quarterback spot.
As always, the roster isn’t a finished product going into the full-team offseason activities.  The first round of OTA’s are next Tuesday through Thursday May 17-19.  There will be OTA’s each of the following two weeks followed by a mini-camp prior to the team breaking until training camp.
Although the Cardinals are pretty much set at the skill positions, you just never know what will happen.  Here’s hoping that Penny and Hubert both make enough of an impact to continue with the team through at least training camp.
