Arizona Cardinals training camp starts on Thursday, first practice Friday

The long wait is almost over.  We are just now three days away until the Arizona Cardinals report for training camp.  The first practice takes place on Friday afternoon at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale.

Practice Friday and Saturday will take place from 2:30 p.m-4:30 p.m.  with another on Sunday from 2:00 p.m.- 4:30 p.m.  The same schedule as Sunday will be held Monday and Tuesday of next week.  The players first day off will be Wednesday August 3rd.

The Cardinals will have their annual Red & White Scrimmage on Saturday August 8th from 2:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. It will be the only Saturday event during training camp.

The first game will be at home on Friday August 12th against the Oakland Raiders.  They also play at San Diego Chargers on Friday August 19th, which will be proceeded by a week of practice in California with the Chargers.

The Cardinals preseason schedule will wrap up on the road Sunday August 28th at the Houston Texans and home against the Denver Broncos on September 1st.  The last day of training camp will be Friday August 26th.

The top positions to watch for competition on defense will be at cornerback as the Cardinals continue to find a starter opposite Patrick Peterson.  Also look for some competition at safety as Tyrann Mathieu continues to rehab from his week 15 ACL injury in 2015.

On the offensive side of the ball expect competition at tight end, receiver, and center.  The Cardinals are looking for a new starting center after the departure of Lyle Sendlein.

Special teams are not immune from position competition.  Punter Drew Butler will have Garrett Swanson to compete with.  There is also a two-man competition for long-snapper after the retirement of Mike Leach.
