The Arizona Cardinals don’t need to sign free agent QB Nick Foles.
Former Philadelphia Eagles and Los Angeles Rams quarterback was released last Wednesday, and has yet to sign with a team. The Cardinals are actively looking for the future replacement for Carson Palmer and some have brought up the possibility of Foles signing with the Rams’ NFC West rival.
Foles had a breakout season with the Eagles in 2013 where he threw 27 touchdowns with 2 interceptions in 13 games played. After missing the second half of the 2014 season with a broken collarbone, Foles was traded to the Rams and was subsequently benched for Case Keenum. After the Rams drafted Jared Goff number 1 overall in this year’s draft, Foles request for a release was granted.
While Foles maybe be an exciting option for fans, there’s no room for him on the Cardinals. Bruce Arians and the rest of the coaching staff are happy with Drew Stanton as the team’s back up and it is unlikely that Foles would be willing to serve as the third string quarterback for 2-3 years.
Stanton is invaluable to the Cardinals, with the organization spending big money to keep him in the desert. The Cardinals also brought up the possibility of letting Stanton take over for Palmer when the time comes for him to retire.
CBS Sports recently ranked teams based teams as potential landing spots for Nick Foles. The Cardinals were near the bottom of the list at 29th. The primary reasons for the Cardinals not needing Foles was due to how much Arians and the staff love Drew Stanton, while also commending him for his superb dance moves.
Apart from his historic 2013 season, Foles hasn’t had the same success in his other 3 seasons. In the last 2 seasons, Foles has throwns 20 touchdowns along with 20 interceptions with a win-loss record of 10-9.
The Cardinals know what they have in Stanton, so it’s best to not fix anything that’s not broken.
