Fitzgerald and Palmer agree to extensions with the Arizona Cardinals
The Arizona Cardinals announced today that they have agreed to extensions with Larry Fitzgerald and Carson Palmer.
There had been speculation going around that star wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald was looking to retire following this season. It was also uncertain as to how much longer quarterback Carson Palmer would play before hanging it up.
Those doubts were cleared up today when Adam Schefter of NFL.com announced the one year extensions of both Fitzgerald and Palmer.
Larry Fitzgerald, who led the team in receptions last season with 109, was due to become a free agent following this season. A resurgent year for the wide receiver, Fitzgerald had his first 1000 yard receiving season since 2011 along with 9 touchdown receptions and was named to the Pro Bowl.
Carson Palmer, who had an MVP caliber year this past season, was set to enter the free agency pool after the 2017 season. Palmer led the Cardinals to the franchise’s best record and to the doorstep of the Super Bowl. Finishing with 4671 passing yards and 35 touchdowns with just 11 interceptions, Palmer was voted to the Pro Bowl and was named a Second-team All-Pro.
The extensions of both Fitzgerald and Palmer. could not have come at a better time. Arizona is poised to make another Super Bowl run, with this season possibly being the year they break through.
Fitzgerald is going to turn 33 at the end of the month, and Palmer 37 at the end of the year. Age hasn’t appeared to slow down either player as both are coming off one of the best season’s of their career.
With Fitzgerald and Palmer. locked up, it provides the Cardinals with a sense of certainty regarding two of their most important positions for the foreseeable future. It also presents the strong likelihood of Fitzgerald and Palmer retiring as Arizona Cardinals.
