Arizona Cardinals running back David Johnson tearing up the record books

Arizona Cardinals running back David Johnson has become the first player in NFL history to start a season with 14 straight games with 100 or more total yards.  David Johnson entered the record books with a 5-yard run with 11:06 left in the fourth quarter. During Coach Bruce Arians pre-game press conference he spoke on the possibility of David Johnson breaking the record.

"“That’s elite company, nobody,”  “That speaks for itself, really. The people that he’s being mentioned with are Hall of Fame guys, so for a second-year player, I think it’s outstanding.”"

Johnson’s stunning performance is also leaving its mark on the Cardinals franchise. Johnson tied John David Crow for the single-season touchdown record with 17, a record that has been unmatched since 1962. David Johnson finished Sunday’s loss, with 13 rushing touchdowns this season, one short of Crow’s franchise record of 14.

Johnson recorded four catches for 55 yards and 12 carries for 53 rushing yards, making him the third player in history to record 100 or more scrimmage yards in 14 straight games or more, joining the ranks of former Lions star Barry Sanders and Raiders’ Marcus Allen.

David Johnson’s second rushing touchdown on Sunday, gave Johnson his 30th touchdown in 30 career games. Johnson’s role on the Cardinals team has grown, following the release of former wide receiver Michael Floyd. Johnson’s 108 yards from scrimmage, accounted for 25.4% of the Cardinals total on Sunday.

Johnson also has the opportunity to make history, by becoming the third player in NFL history to reach 1,000 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards in the same reason. The current record is held by former St. Louis Rams running back Marshall Faulk and the former San Francisco 49ers running back Roger Craig.

Johnson was selected by the Cardinals in the third round of the 2015 NFL Draft. The star running back has accounted for more than 40 percent of the Cardinals offense this season. Johnson’s strong performance this season has made him a centerpiece in the Cardinals game plan.
