The Arizona Cardinals have been selected to play in the 2017 Pro Football Hall of Fame game

The Arizona Cardinals will play the NFL’s first preseason game for the second time in six years this August.  The NFL announced the Cardinals will take on the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday night August 3rd.

The Cardinals, who also play the Cowboys in the 2017 regular season in Glendale at University of Phoenix Stadium, played in the Hall of Fame game against the New Orleans Saints in 2012.  This will be the first time the game has been played on a Thursday night.

The game will have special meaning for Cardinals fans as former quarterback Kurt Warner will be inducted into the Hall of Fame that weekend in Canton, Ohio.  The Cardinals seem like a no-brainer choice for this game.

Also being inducted is Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.  The NFL is no dummy when it comes to marketing this game.  After last summer’s debacle in Canton when the game had to be cancelled after the schedule start time due to field issues, the NFL had to come up with a marquee matchup.

The Cardinals last played the Cowboys in the preseason in 2013, coach Bruce Arians first season in Arizona, winning 12-7.  The last overall meeting was in 2014 when the Cardinals won 28-17 in Arlington, Texas.

Don’t expect to see too much from starters in this one.  Fans will be lucky to see if guys like quarterback Carson Palmer, receiver Larry Fitzgerald, or running back David Johnson will even suit up.

The same can be said for Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott, receiver Dez Bryant or running back Ezekiel Elliot.  The big question is will Tony Romo still be around as the backup quarterback or will he already be gone?

The Thursday night preseason kickoff will air on NBC.  It will be the first of five preseason games for both teams.
