The Arizona Cardinals received some good draft news on Friday from the NFL

The NFL has a crazy process in how it deems which teams will get compensatory draft picks and how many each team gets.  Don’t get me started.

All we know today is that the Arizona Cardinals were awarded one of those extra draft picks for the upcoming 2017 NFL Draft.  It will be in the fifth-round.  Let’s all rejoice!

While the Cardinals got one extra pick, their NFC West rival Seattle Seahawks got three of them. Again, please don’t ask me why or how.  Go ask the NFL.

What I will tell you is I believe this is a good thing for the Cardinals.  While a new rule in place this year allows teams to trade these picks, the hope is the Cardinals will keep theirs.

If the Cardinals don’t draft a quarterback in the first-round, this could free them up to go after one in the middle rounds.  I’m not saying they should wait that long to find their future quarterback, however if they take a quarterback earlier, this allows them to go get a player they need at another position.

Taking a quarterback previously may have eliminated drafting a receiver, or cornerback, or even a running back the Cardinals may be interested in. There was no immediate word on what the Cardinals may do.

While some may not necessarily like the picks being given out, I believe it gives teams to stock pile picks.  Each team is allowed up to 90 players in training camp.  Why not fill the roster with more drafted players?

While this news isn’t Earth-shattering it also is a good reminder the Cardinals have several needs and then will be looking at other positions they can add depth to.  The NFL Draft will take place on April 27-29th in Philadelphia.
