The Arizona Cardinals bring back two of their own free agents with deals on Monday

With free agency starting next week, it’s time for the Arizona Cardinals to start thinking about doing business with their own free agents.  On Monday, they brought back two players with one-year deals.

Linebacker Gabe Martin and receiver Jeremy Ross both signed new deals that gives them the opportunity to win jobs this summer.  For Martin it will be his third season with the team.

Martin spent his rookie year with on the practice squad.  He played in eight games in 2016.  He registered four tackles and recovered one fumble.

As for Ross, he was a late season addition to the roster with injuries and performance issues arising at the receiver position.  He had four receptions for 37-yards and a touchdown in his short time with the Cardinals in 2016.

The Cardinals are the sixth team that Ross has played for in his four seasons out of the University of California-Berkeley. He started the 2016 season with the New York Jets.  He played six games for them.

The Cardinals have been rumored to be looking for another receiver in the draft or in free agency. Some view that position as a need for the team.

With Larry Fitzgerald likely calling it a career after the 2017 season, the Cardinals need to look to the future.  The signing of Ross doesn’t exclude the Cardinals from finding another receiver either in the draft or free agency though.

The team had as many as 11 receivers in training camp last August before breaking camp with six of them.  The Ross deal means the Cardinals do indeed mean to address their receiving core with the aging Fitzgerald and the uncertain near futures of John Brown and Jaron Brown.

John Brown is dealing with Sickle Cell Trait and Jaron Brown will be coming off a torn ACL in the 2016 season.  The depth isn’t what it used to be.
