Fans would prefer the Arizona Cardinals to draft Pat Mahomes as the quarterback of the future

In a recent Raising Zona poll, fans voted they would prefer to see the Arizona Cardinals take Pat Mahomes as their future quarterback in the 2017 NFL Draft.  Deshaun Watson was second in the voting.

Of the 67 voters, 46 percent want to see Mahomes, out of Texas Tech, as the quarterback that replaces Carson Palmer once he retires in the next year or two.  Watson, from Clemson, finished with 34% of the vote.

Just 12 percent want to see the Cardinals draft Notre Dame’s DeShone Kizer.  The other 8 percent want another unnamed quarterback.

The issue with Mahomes is although he has a great arm, the system he walks into may fail him. Most of his college snaps were from the shotgun position.

Although there is some of that in Bruce Arians’ offense, there are plenty of snaps taken from directly under center.  Life in the NFL would be an adjustment for Mahomes.

The good thing though is he would be able to sit for a year or two before he would be asked to be the main guy.  Of course you can make the same argument for any other quarterback drafted.

For the Cardinals to draft Mahomes, the team would likely have to drop in the first round or have hope he’d still be available in the second.  Some experts have him as low as a third-round pick but he won’t make it that long.

Drafting him at number 13 though is a little high, so unless the Cardinals move from their spot, he is unlikely to join the Cardinals.  It is likely none of these guys joins the Cardinals as a quarterback selection is possible in the middle rounds.  Kizer is projected to be a mid to high first round pick and Watson has been projected as a first rounder.
