Torrey Smith is a free agent wide receiver that could make sense for the Arizona Cardinals

The Arizona Cardinals wide receiver situation is well known. All-world star Larry Fitzgerald is returning for the 2017 season, but there’s a very good chance next season will be his last. Former heir apparent Michael Floyd struggled with drops in 2016, and injuries affected other members of the receiving corps. They need help, and one name that makes a lot of sense is Torrey Smith.

Smith was a former second round draft pick of the Baltimore Ravens. While in Baltimore, he made a name for himself, averaging 53 catches, 898 yards, and 8 touchdowns over the four years he was there. He spent the last two seasons in San Francisco, but didn’t have nearly the success. Today, the 49ers cut the veteran receiver.

The University of Maryland product was drafted, in part, for his big play ability, something he has displayed for most of his career. This alone makes him an ideal fit in Arizona. The Cardinals offense is built around throws down the field, and they’ve shown a predilection for acquiring fast receivers.

Smith is also young enough, at 28, that he can be signed to a long-term deal that will keep him for around a while. When he’s on top of his game, he can not only greatly improve the Cardinals chances in 2017, but he can stop in as a top target once Fitzgerald retires.

Smith’s two seasons in San Francisco didn’t unfold the way he would have liked. He had his worst season in 2016, catching just 20 passes for 267 yards. Then, he suffered a concussion and missed the last four games.

The Cardinals have some money issues, and have a plethora of free agents of their own they’d like to re-sign, so the deal would need to take that into account. However, it’s a move that makes a lot of sense. Smith will have a lot of suitors, and some might have more to offer than Arizona does, but it’s a situation that’s definitely worth looking into.
