Only two college quarterbacks worth Arizona Cardinals time
By Jim Koch
When the NFL Draft finally rolls around later this month, there’s only two signal-callers the Arizona Cardinals should target
It’s not news to the Arizona Cardinals that they should be grooming a quarterback for the future. Carson Palmer isn’t getting any younger, and has even said he’d help with the tutoring of the youngster. The sooner they get one on the roster, the better.
Arizona has the 13th overall pick in this month’s NFL Draft. While not an ideal spot to be in, it is high enough that the club will have a shot at one of the top prospects.
There’s a problem though. This year’s class is not rich in quarterback talent. Nevertheless, there are two that may be a good fit for the Bruce Arians style of offense.
Mitch Trubisky is one of the two, and without a doubt will be selected in the first round. Unfortunately, there’s a good chance the North Carolina product will be gone by the time the Cardinals make their pick in round one. If he does fall however, Steve Keim and company should pounce.
Trubisky has decent size (6’2″, 222) and a rifle for an arm. He holds up well in the face of a pass rush, and has shown an ability to get a first down with his feet when needed. He also possesses a quick release and can make all the throws.

There are negatives to Trubisky’s game. Like many of today’s collegiate quarterbacks, he operated in large part from the shotgun formation. Also, he has just one season of starting experience, though that one campaign was outstanding.
Cal’s Davis Webb may also be a good fit in the desert. He has the size (6’5″, 229) and arm strength that head coach Bruce Arians covets. His stock rose at the Senior Bowl after he was named the game’s MVP.
Webb, like Trubisky, will need to learn to take snaps from under center. Unlike Trubisky, he struggles to make ALL the throws. He threw to mostly wide-open wide receivers during his college career.
Drafting Webb with the 13th overall pick would be a reach. He has been shooting up draft boards though, so taking him in the second round shouldn’t be out of the question.
The main objective of the front office is to find the perfect candidate to lead the Cards into the future. Whether they they find him later this month is anyone’s guess. With a little luck, they will.
