The Arizona Cardinals will have four quarterbacks in training camp vying for maybe three spots

There is no question as to who will be the Arizona Cardinals starting quarterback in 2017.  Carson Palmer returns for his 15th season, his 5th with the Cardinals.

Many believe it will be his last season win or lose.  Don’t be so sure about that.  Even if they win a Super Bowl in 2017, Palmer could opt to stay for the final season of his contract to help the team out in preparing the quarterback of the future.

For now though, if you are looking for quarterback competition, look no further than the backups. It should be a good one.

The incumbent backup is Drew Stanton.  After him the Cardinals brought in Blaine Gabbert and also undrafted rookie free agent Trevor Knight out of Texas A&M.

The Cardinals may opt to keep a total of three quarterbacks but don’t hold your breath on it.  If there is a need somewhere else, coach Bruce Arians may opt to go with just two.

If that’s the case, does Gabbert or even Knight have a shot of supplanting Stanton as the backup? Maybe but again don’t go counting on it.

Arians has said all the right things up to this point how Gabbert has looked good in practice.  Let’s see how his camp and preseason go.  As for Knight, it says something they kept him over recently released Zac Dysart.

Roster predictions:

Starter: Palmer

Backup: Stanton

Practice squad: Knight

Gabbert’s competition will be Stanton.  The Cardinals have the luxury of five preseason games this season, so there will be plenty of chances for either one of them to earn the backup role.
