The Arizona Cardinals suffered their first major injury of training camp
So much for the no major injuries for the Arizona Cardinals I was talking about on Saturday. Cornerback Ronald Zamort has been diagnosed with a torn ACL.
Not one day earlier Zamort had been elevated on the depth chart ahead of second-year cornerback Brandon Williams. That seems to be the luck the Cardinals have had to deal with at that position recently.
Zamort was carted off during Saturday’s Red-White scrimmage at University of Phoenix Stadium. Initial reports were it looked like he would be alright based on how he got up on his own and put weight on his leg.
Now the bad news has been passed down. Its not only bad news for the team and fans but for especially Zamort. Here was a guy on the brink of making a name for himself.
He was impressive enough in just one week of training camp practice to move up on the chart ahead of Williams. That may not sound that impressive but if you had paid any attention to head coach Bruce Arains in the offseason, Williams was looking very good.

The Cardinals also lost cornerback Justin Bethel to an injury a couple of days ago. However he should return this week and has not been ruled out of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game on Thursday night.
Bethel may be needed more than ever right now. However the Cardinals did bring in a couple of free agent corners to look at last week. One of them was former San Diego Chargers corner Brandon Flowers. He passed his physical but has not been signed as of yet.
The injury to Zamort may now expedite things in that department. I would expect the Cardinals to place Zamort on the injured reserve at some point soon and replace him with another cornerback on the 90-man roster.
