The Arizona Cardinals broke a month-long training camp on Thursday

As much fun as it is to go out to University of Phoenix Stadium and watch the Arizona Cardinals practice for a couple of hours, it will be much more fun to watch them do it for real and soon. Training camp is over.

After reporting for camp on July 21st, an earlier start than every other team except the Dallas Cowboys due to the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game on August 3rd, the team finally got to go home Thursday.

They won’t be home long however.  Those who have homes here will get to spend the night in their own beds Thursday night.  On Friday though, they are off to Atlanta to face the Falcons on Saturday.

The Cardinals training camp is always fun for fans but for players, coaches and staff, it can be a long month.  I’ve been there as a one time employee of the club.

After the Cardinals play the Falcons on Saturday evening, they will have one more preseason game at the Denver Broncos next Thursday evening.  Then it is time to trim rosters to 53 during Labor Day Weekend.

The NFL regular season starts in two weeks on September 7th in New England.  The Cardinals will open their season three days later in Detroit.

There is still plenty of preparing to do before that opening day.  The Cardinals still sit at the roster limit but must trim down to 53 by September 2nd.  With no first trim down date to 75 players first, that could be a difficult task.

That makes the game against the Falcons important to many.  Don’t be surprised if the Cardinals do eventually make some cuts even before the Broncos game.  By then most roster decisions will likely have been made.

The breaking of camp also means we are getting closer to the end of summer.  It’ll still be warm for awhile but the next time the Cardinals enter University of Phoenix Stadium will be on Monday September 25th against the Cowboys.
