Arizona Cardinals with commendable effort but just don’t have enough to defeat the Seattle Seahawks

The opportunities were there.  The Arizona Cardinals had their chances to end their four-game winless streak at home to the Seattle Seahawks.  It was not to be.

Problem started early.  The Cardinals lost left tackle D.J. Humphries to a likely MCL sprain.  They also lost safety Tyvon Branch early to a knee injury.

Despite never having the lead, the Cardinals were never out of the game but rarely felt in it. The Seahawks helped keep the Cardinals in the game with penalties.

However it was a sign of things to come when Cardinals running back Adrian Peterson fumbled on his first carry of the evening.  He ended the night with 21 carries for just 29 yards.

As the game wore on, the Cardinals were forced to abandon the run once again.  Quarterback Drew Stanton went 24-47 for 273-yards and a touchdown.  Stanton did not throw an interception.

His receivers didn’t help.  Dropped passes were costly.  However it was a team effort.  The Cardinals played pretty well on defense.  They failed on one really big play though.

On a second and 21, Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson scrambled forever, looked to be near sacked a couple of times and found receiver Doug Baldwin on the sidelines and he scrambled 54-yards to the two-yard line.

After the ensuing touchdown, Seattle went up 22-10 and the result was sealed.  The Cardinals added a late touchdown to bring the score to 22-16 but with only 20 seconds remaining, it was over.

There are a lot of things the Cardinals can point to.  Sure, they lost Humphries and Branch.  They also lost tight end Ifeanyi Momah in the second half.

The Seahawks lost players too.  Running back C.J. Procise was injured being bent backwards.  They also lost cornerback Richard Sherman.  He appeared to say on the sidelines he tore his Achilles.

The 12 penalties were nothing new for the Seahawks but the Cardinals committed nine of their own.  It was too much to overcome.
