Arizona Cardinals quarterback Blaine Gabbert may be getting an extension soon

When Blaine Gabbert was signed by the Arizona Cardinals back during OTA’s, it seemed more like an experiment.  It seemed like a kick-the-tires kind of move.

However after reality came in November after losing Carson Palmer to injured reserve and Drew Stanton to an injury, Gabbert has certainly played well at times.  Key word there is at times.

He has been fairly inconsistent.  One minute shows the great potential he has if given the chance to start consistently.  Then the next minute he is throwing some too ridiculous for even a Pop Warner kid.

The Cardinals have seen more good than bad however and now are looking to give him an extension.  How long an extension remains to be seen but don’t read more into it other than the Cardinals are interested in bringing him in next season.

That doesn’t mean he will start in 2018.  There is a lot to sort out.  What will become of Carson Palmer?  With receiver Larry Fitzgerald likely coming back, it does open the possibility of Palmer playing out his contract in 2018.

Also, what about Drew Stanton?  One would have to think the Cardinals move on from Stanton if Gabbert is signed.  More than likely the Cardinals will draft a quarterback this April.

The Cardinals won’t be able to draft one of the top quarterbacks though given their current standing.  They would have to trade up.  There is uncertainty that there is anyone worth trading up to get.

So that leaves a mid-rounder to try and win a job for the future.  If Gabbert is extended, then you are likely looking at him or Palmer as the 2018 starter.

A lot will happen between now and the draft.  A lot of our questions may not get answered on this subject until well after the season has ended.
