The Arizona Cardinals are reportedly close to sealing the deal for their new offensive coordinator

Many fans wanted John Defilippo from the Philadelphia Eagles as the new offensive coordinator for the Arizona Cardinals.  Instead they went the way of Mike McCoy.

McCoy is coming off his second stint as the offensive coordinator of the Denver Broncos.  He was their OC from 2010-2012 and again last year in 2017.  In between he was the head coach of the San Diego Chargers from 2013-2016.

The name is well known but is McCoy the right guy for the Cardinals?  There is a mixed bag of reactions to his hiring and rightfully so.

His offense’s haven’t blown people away.  It is not a sexy choice but not a horrible one either.  One thing is for sure, people sure didn’t seem to want former Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell either.

Was there going to be a wrong choice?  Possibly.  The only way we  will know for sure is to wait and see.  A lot of what we see from the Cardinals offense next season will surely ride on who the Cardinals bring in at quarterback.

Fair or not, the success of McCoy will likely ride on the shoulders of whoever is tapped for the starting quarterback position in 2018.  This is another decision we will have to trust head coach Steve Wilks and general manager Steve Keim on.

McCoy did have Phillip Rivers for four seasons, so there is that.  However in McCoy’s four seasons as head coach, he had just two winning seasons.

Is McCoy a good enough hire to keep Larry Fitzgerald around for another season?  That’s another maybe.  We don’t know how Fitz feels on the subject.  The only thing we know about Fitz is he has met with Wilks.

For now, we will keep the jury out on McCoy.  Let’s give him a chance to see what he can do to get the Cardinals offense back on track in 2018.  Of course getting running back David Johnson back will go a long way in helping.
