The Arizona Cardinals should consider dealing for Marcus Peters if the rumors about the cornerback’s availability are true

The Arizona Cardinals’ number-one offseason priority is hardly a secret. With exactly zero quarterbacks under contract for the upcoming campaign, the club’s most pressing need is blatantly obvious. Unfortunately, there are other holes that need to be filled, as well.

Incredibly, the number-two cornerback spot is still an issue. Tramon Williams played well in 2017, but the veteran is a free agent who will turn 35 next month. If a recent report by “Pro Football Talk” is true, a more youthful answer to the problem may be presenting itself.

A rumor is swirling that two-time Pro Bowler Marcus Peters may be on the trade block. There’s talk that the Kansas City Chiefs may have soured on their 2015 first-round draft pick. Recent moves by the team seem to lend credence to that sentiment.

In trading signal-caller Alex Smith to the Washington Redskins, the Chiefs received cover guy Kendall Fuller as part of the deal. Then, this past Friday, Kansas City signed free agent David Amerson to a one-year contract. Both are starting-caliber players, a fact which makes parting with Peters more of a possibility.

Acquiring the 6’0″, 197 pounder would be an impressive feather in general manager Steve Keim’s cap. Peters has tallied 151 tackles, 19 interceptions and a whopping 55 passes defensed in just three seasons. Pairing the 25-year old with Patrick Peterson would give the Cards arguably the best cornerback duo in the NFL.

Why would the Chiefs be willing to let go of such a valuable defender? Peters has acted like a spoiled child at times. 2015’s Defensive Rookie of the Year served a one-game suspension last year after tossing a penalty flag into the stands during a matchup with the New York Jets.

That wasn’t the only incident in 2017. After giving up a touchdown to the Redskins, Peters got into it with a fan. Obscenities were reportedly used by the University of Washington product during the argument.

The immature behavior is certainly a red flag. But there’s no arguing what kind of impact Peters could have on the field. If Keim can get past Peters’ indiscretions, the franchise would be getting one of the best defensive backs in the league.

Shutdown cornerbacks don’t grow on trees. Especially ones with the skill-set that Peters possesses. Finding a quarterback is tops on the Cardinals’ offseason list, but shoring up the cornerback position is also extremely important.
