Reports are that another former Arizona Cardinals player has signed elsewhere in free agency

With the Arizona Cardinals running game building around David Johnson, it isn’t much of a shock that former Cardinals running back Kerwynn Williams has signed with a new team.  The good news is he will be in the AFC now.

Williams, with the Cardinals since 2014, has signed with the Kansas City Chiefs per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.  Some had hoped he would remain in Arizona as a backup to Johnson.

While some wanted to see him stay, it is understandable the Cardinals would not be interested in bringing him back.  With Elijhaa Penny and T.J. Logan in the mix it would be a crowded backfield.

Williams though certainly gave Cardinals fans a lot to remember him by.  He was the epitome of next man up when the Cardinals needed him in a pinch late in the 2014 season.

However after an on and off presence on the 53-man roster, it wasn’t until last season he stuck and played all 16 games.  After Johnson was hurt in the season opener against the Detroit Lions, he was tabbed the starting back.

Williams didn’t play that great though.  He lost his starting spot when the Cardinals landed Adrian Peterson.

Still, he managed to rush for 426-yards in a mainly backup role.  He also had 10 receptions as a receiver in 2017.

Once Peterson was injured, Williams stepped back in and helped keep the Cardinals running game relevant down the stretch.  Still, it wasn’t enough for the Cardinals to want to re-sign him.

He may have an issue sticking in Kansas City as well however.  He will be stuck behind some good backs, guys like Kareem Hunt and Charcandrick West.

We wish him the best though in his fight to make the 53-man roster this summer.  He has the talent.  Now it is just a matter of consistency.
