New Arizona Cardinals head coach Steve Wilks started camp with an innovative idea

Even if in the end it doesn’t work out, you have to give Arizona Cardinals head coach Steve Wilks credit for trying.  He put his stamp on things right away once camp got going.

He had a brick placed at every player’s locker at University of Phoenix Stadium.  Each brick had the player’s name on it.

The idea?  The Cardinals are starting a new foundation, a new era, and they will build something great here one brick at a time, just like putting a physical building together.

Some people may think it’s a corny idea and that’s fine.  It’s different.  It’s not something every NFL coach would do.

However Wilks has been around the NFL long enough to know what types of things work and what doesn’t.  He is still getting to know his players and some in camp he won’t ever get to know.

The idea though is that it’s a new season.  This is now Wilks’ team.  But he can’t do it himself.  He needs a team to build a winner.

The team isn’t far off.  Some believe they can contend now with who they have.  Certainly there is belief on this end that can happen.

There is a lot of work to do though over the next six weeks as the Cardinals prepare for the 2018 regular season.  Don’t ever think the work is done.

At least Wilks has come in and trying something.  He is quickly letting people know he is always thinking.  He wants his message to be clear to players right away.

Hopefully every player that makes it to the final 53-man roster will keep that brick in their lockers once the regular season starts.  Now is prep time.

The hard work starts now and doesn’t end until hopefully the first Sunday in February.  Then hopefully no matter what happens this season, it will carry over to 2019 and beyond.

This isn’t a one-year deal.  This is Wilks saying we are going to build a long term winner here.
