The Arizona Cardinals running back depth will be tested after the loss of D.J. Foster

He was looking like he was going to make the Arizona Cardinals 53-man squad come regular season.  Then, preseason game number three happened to running back D.J. Foster.

In the first half of Sunday evening’s game at the Dallas Cowboys, he went down holding his leg on a kickoff play of all plays.

Even though he was seen holding his leg, it turns out his knee is what is injured according to the team.  Foster was carted off, holding his head down.

After David Johnson, Chase Edmonds, them Foster, T.J. Logan are the first four backs on the depth chart.  Now it looks like Logan could end up being the third guy.

If that’s the case, at least Logan shouldn’t have any problem holding the spot.  He had a 59-yard touchdown run in the third quarter against the Cowboys.

Logan is coming off the same injury Johnson had.  His wrist isn’t giving him any troubles now.  But for now, we hope for the best news on the Foster front.

Foster has the same versatility that Johnson has.  He can run the ball and catch the ball.  Those kind of guys can be invaluable to a team.

The question now is who do the Cardinals look to for a fourth running back if Foster is out for the foreseeable future or for the season? Sherman Badie is the fifth back but doesn’t seem to be in any danger of making the team.

If Foster is done, then certainly the Cardinals will be watching the waiver wire this week.  Until they decide on a fourth back, the Cardinals have a pretty darn good trio.

Elijhaa Penny moved over to fullback but theoretically could switch between the two spots if the Cardinals wanted to go with an extra player at another position.  We’ll see how that all plays out. But for now, let’s hope for the best on Foster.
